Wilton History Group Remembers Bill Fox

Billy E. Fox~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Billy E. Fox – his story in brief

Bill lived during the Great Depression and his family like many others had fallen onto hard times.  His mother felt she could no longer care for her two boys financially and had to make a difficult decision to place them both in what amounted to be an orphanage.  Many would think this would have created such anger towards his mother; but not for Bill.  He held his mother to a high regard grasping at just how difficult this decision was for her, and he never lost his love or respect for her by any means.

Though Bill was small in stature he had the tenacity of a man who stood six feet tall.  When he went to join the Marine Corps, he was told he was too short.  He argued with the recruiter and finally won out.  When he got to boot camp, they couldn’t find a pair of boots to fit him.  So, he spent the first several weeks marching, hiking, and running the obstacle course in his once shiny brown “wing-tip” brogans.

During World War II, the American flag emerged to rally and inspire the nation in a time of crisis.  On the battlefield and the home front, the flag symbolized the values and freedoms the nation was fighting for.  By the end of the war, the flag had become the emblem of a superpower with a mission to promote democracy around the world.  Thus, being why Bill held the American flag to the highest regard and lived out his days as a very patriotic man who loved the country he fought for.

On February 10, 2018, Billy E. Fox passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 94, just a month shy of his 95th birthday.

Bill was a proud veteran, who served in World War II as a Marine sergeant.  A devoted husband to his wife Nancy Fox, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and confidant to many.

He leaves us a hero and a man of great honor!
